What is Hantavirus?
It is also known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. This
virus is not spread from one person to another. It spreads when bites of mice,
gilherries, and when exposed to urine, feces, and saliva.
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by
rodents or mice, gilherries. Various diseases can cause syndromes in people
around the world. Infection with any hantavirus can cause hantavirus disease in
people.
History of Hantavirus:
In the US, hantaviruses are known as the "New
World" haunta virus and can cause the hanta virus pulmonary syndrome
(HPS). Other Hanta viruses, known as the "Old World" Hanta virus.
These viruses are mostly found in Europe and Asia and can cause hemorrhagic
fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Each haunta virus serotype has a specific rodent host
species and is transmitted to people via urine, feces, and saliva via
aerosolized viruses, and occurs less frequently than bites from infected hosts.
In the United States, the most important hantavirus that can cause HPS is the
Syn Nambre virus, which is spread by the fear mouse.
Where have you been found? (Reported Cases):
Hantavirus virus surveillance in the United States began
in 1993 during a severe respiratory disease outbreak in several regions.
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) became a nationally notable disease in
1995. When fever is present in a patient it is reported nationally through the
Nationally Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS).
In 2014, the Council of State & Territorial
Epidemiologists confirmed the laboratory to include HPS and non-pulmonary
hantavirus infection infections that began reporting in 2015.
As recently as 2020, in March, one person has died from
the Hanta virus in Greece, China.
Symptoms of haunta virus:
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
when a person becomes infected with the Hanta virus, he should -
• 101–102 degree fever
• body aches
• headache
• stomach ache
• vomiting
• with dry cough
• Exhalation of breath
How is Hanta virus tested?
The CDC performs immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to check for
IgM antibodies to detect the virus.
